Hair lingo shouldn’t feel like a foreign language. Whether you’re wondering what toner actually does or you’ve always been curious about the magic behind a balayage, we’ve got the answers. This is your cheat sheet to all things hair, so you can walk into your next appointment like a pro. Let’s break it down and keep things simple—you’ve got this!
How to book (terminology)?
- Partial highlights (half head), root touch-ups or introducing new highlights.
- Full head highlights, root touch-ups or introducing new highlights.
- Root colour, grey coverage or regrowth touch-ups.
- Full colour, one solid colour from root to end.
- Global Bleach-out, lightening all the hair.
- Balayage, more natural blend, touch-ups or from scratch.
What is a colour correction?
Colour corrections can be best described as a hair appointment that requires a longer than usual appointment to either fix a hair colour or for a drastic change in your existing hair colour. A consultation is recommended beforehand so we can book time appropriately.
What is colour consultation?
When you’re not sure what to book, we offer in-salon consultations to figure out the hair direction you want to go and to book appropriate time for your appointment.
What is toner?
A toner is a colour that is applied to refresh and rebalance the colour, removing brassy or yellow tones.
What is an All-Over colour?
An all-over colour is one solid colour from root to end. We colour your hair either darker or the same colour as previous. If you are looking for a lighter colour, you may want to book balayage or highlights.
What are Highlights?
Highlighting is a technique used to lighten the hair, using foils in a systemized pattern to give the desired amount of blonde and lightness. Can be done as partial head, full head, root touch-up or face-framing/contouring.
What are Lowlights?
Similar to the highlighting technique, but instead lowlights are used to darken hair strands. Used to either darken the overall look or to add some dimension/contrast.
What is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand hair painting technique used to lighten strands throughout mid-length and ends to give more of a natural or sun-kissed look to your hair. This technique allows more of a softer and gradual blend to your existing colour allowing an easier grow out.
What is a Shadow Root?
After highlighting hair, we can give the hair a “shadow root” with colour to soften any harshness at the scalp to allow a softer grow out.
What is a Global Bleach-out?
A Global bleach-out is when all the hairs on your head are lightened to your desired blonde giving you the ‘full’ blonde look.
What is a Root Retouch?
A service in which we are colouring only the regrowth from 1-2 inches off the scalp. This could be a highlight touch-up or a solid colour touch-up, (grey coverage).
How often should I be coming back for touch-ups?
- We recommend 6 to 8 weeks for grey coverage or routine touch-ups, whether it be a root colour or highlights.
- Balayage touch-ups can vary between 2 to 4 months.
- A toner can be done in between scheduled appointments to maintain desired colour.
- Global bleach-outs should be touched up every 4 to 6 weeks to avoid ‘banding’.
